Sweet & Tender Hooligans kill it in OC!

Sweet and Tender Hooligans LIVE @ The Observatory in Santa Ana, CA January 14th, 2017.

If you have ever been a fan of Morrissey and The Smiths you may have lamented that you have not seen either Live and in concert. The Smiths broke up in the late 80’s and have promised to never reunite to play live.

The Summer that I was into the Smiths first was 1986 and they played Irvine Meadows in my hometown of Irvine, CA. My parents said I could go to two shows that Summer and I opted for just as legendary Depeche Mode ‘Black Celebration’ tour and The Psychedelic Furs with Dramarama and The Untouchables.

Whereas I love all of those bands, I chose very poorly and passed on seeing The Smiths. I have made up with it by seeing Morrissey 10+ times LIVE.

However, there is an OC, CA cover band for Morrissey and The Smiths called ‘Sweet and Tender Hooligans’. AND they are freaking amazing!

Fronted by the Mexican Morrissey Jose Maldonado, the band lept onto stage and ripped into Morrissey’s “First of the Gang To Die”. The crowd fully supported this cover band by singing along and dancing in proper fashion.

Also early on the band did a cover of The Smith’s “What Difference Does It Make?” and the house went nuts. Always one of their best songs! But this was to be expected from a band that is the next best thing to the real thing. Some even feel Jose Maldonado does Morrissey better than Morrissey, that’s a bold statement.

There is no denying that the Sweet and Tender Hooligans do indeed capture the sound and spirit of the alt 80’s legends The Smiths, especially on tunes such as “How Soon Is Now?” and “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out”. The band becomes whatever era you are looking for. Jose Maldonado orchestrates his voice based on what era Morrissey/Smiths is going on.

For “The Headmaster Ritual” from The Smiths ‘Queen Is Dead’ album the band went deep and evoked the true spirit of the Smiths with deep edgy guitars and soulful echoing vocals.

If you have never seen Morrissey or The Smiths yet you are a big fan look no further. These guys are the real deal, they kill it LIVE and will transport you to your childhood and beyond!
